New approach to high risk multidisciplinary team training

Previously it has not been possible to train the whole team simultaneously on complex procedures in a fully realistic simulated environment. Orzone announces novel functionalities in the modular surgical/interventional operating theatre (Orcamp), enabling the integration of various simulators for multidisciplinary team based training.

Today's complex procedures require in many cases collaboration between the anaesthesiologist and the operator, such as in trauma situations. Previously it has not been possible to train the whole team simultaneously on these complex procedures without using actors or scripts at least for part of the training need (e.g. training focus has realistically focused on either the anaesthesiology elements or the surgical/intervention component). In addition there has been a lack of structured tools for briefing and debriefing for team scenarios that evolve these complex procedures.

Orzone recently participated at CIRSE in Munich where multidisciplinary simulated team training was conducted by the use of Orcamp, equipped with two leading simulators; VIST®-C and SimMan® 3G.
With the VIST®-C (high-fidelity procedural VR simulator) and the SimMan® 3G (a realistic, adult full-body patient simulator) the OR team training could involve complex training components for all team members enabling multidisciplinary team based training.

The novel functionality means that the complex procedures can be synchronized through a set of innovative tools giving the operator and the anaesthesiologist the possibility to interact whilst each of them running highly realistic simulations for their area of expertise.

A unique comprehensive training environment which can be used for facilitating the harmonisation of training and assessment of knowledge, skills and behaviours. Orsync

In a separate announcement Orzone publicize the novel tool; Orsync - a tool for integrated multiple video channels, annotations, task analysis and procedure checklist, metrics from various simulators and structured assessment methods. This tool also contains futures for tracking multiple people and was successfully used during the training sessions at CIRSE.

About Orzone

Orzone, the creator of Orcamp is committed to improving the quality of healthcare and minimizing the risk of medical errors by developing creative training and assessment solutions based on advanced web and simulation technology. Orzone works in co-operation with the European Union of Medical Specialists (UEMS) to synchronize European medical training. This collaboration has resulted in the creation of a comprehensive electronic platform; Ortrac, to support medical training, assessment and continuous professional development (CME/CPD).

Orzone joins Apple iOS Developer program and announce product for Residency tracking

Orzone AB today announced its registration as an Apple Developer and has joined the iOS Developer Program. The purpose and aim of the registration and commitment to the iOS Developer program is to increase the access to learning resources by improving the support for mobile computing devices. The first step is to release a new innovative product for residency tracking; an iPad application for Ortrac.

About Ortrac

Ortrac (e-platform) is a web application for harmonization of postgraduate training, accreditation and revalidation. The application is developed through a joint venture with UEMS (European Union of Medical Specialists) and Orzone. The aim with the platform is to offer UEMS associated bodies, i.e National Societies and National Authorities, appropriate tools for integration of harmonized curricula into daily practice.
Ortrac essentially supports the following core processes:

  • Record trainee progress towards becoming a medical specialist.
  • Create and maintain formative and summative assessments globally.
  • Capture real world clinical as well as training experience through a set of log books.
  • Make published or non-published papers and presentations available to your work group.
  • Instructor/Tutor tools to evaluate student progression

To become a user of Ortrac you must be a qualified healthcare professional, either in training or a qualified Specialist. Please request a personal account through your local Society, National Authority or your UEMS representative.

Global assessments

The European Union for Medical Specialists (UEMS), UEMS-Special Medical sections and Orzone earlier this year collaboratively enabled candidates from 14 countries in Europe, Asia and the Middle East to complete online simultaneous pilot examinations, based on the European Core Curriculum developed for each participating medical specialty. The technical web based platform Ortrac was used and was secured from the Orzone headquarters in Goteborg, Sweden. The purpose of the this project is aligned with the mission of Orzone; to establish a scientific accuracy throughout the whole of Europe and in the nearby future implement the testing method for all trainees enrolled on the European Core Curriculum.

Orzone and CIRSE announces schedule and procedures at CIRSE, Munich (GE) 10-14 September 2011 in Orcamp Experience

The training opportunity:

CIRSE delegates will have the possibility to train on specific topics such as Uterine Artery Embolization (UAE), Critical Limb Ischemia (CLI) and Superficial Femoral Artery (SFA) (performed on a Mentice VIST-C), in life-like situations in dedicated sessions, led by proctors from the CIRSE faculty in the Orcamp Cathlab environment. The curriculum for SFA and CLI is developed by Dr Fabrizio Fanelli (IT) and Prof. Lars Lönn (DK) and is based on standard practice and quality improvement guidelines (CIRSE). The actual training equipment in the Orcamp includes a C-arm, control panel, operating table and monitors and skills, life support and trauma patient simulators. The patients are a high fidelity procedural VR simulator; the VIST® -C, developed by Mentice and the SimMan® 3G; a realistic, adult full body patient simulator, developed by Laerdal.

Learning objectives:

  • Manage to get optimal images for the chosen anatomy
  • Image management
  • Radiation protection and radiation safety
  • Identifying optimal angles
  • Procedural steps based on recommended guidelines
  • Decision on how to treat the patient
  • Choice of devices
  • Communication with team members

There will be a total of 12 Orcamp training sessions at CIRSE 2011:
