Orcamp at the Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiological Society of Europe (CIRSE) congress

By collaboration between CIRSE and Orzone during the CIRSE congress in Valencia, educational sessions were performed in Orcamp with great success. A new level of team training was introduced. Training sessions based on a curriculum developed in partnership with Prof. Jon Moss (Glasgow/UK), participating radiologists and vascular surgeons were given the opportunity to practice uterine artery embolisation (UAE). The procedure was performed in the completely new life-like and risk-free hybrid training operating room – Orcamp, developed by Orzone.

The Curriculum was based on standard practice and UAE quality improvement guidelines  which involved a theoretical background and hands-on training. The sessions were quickly filled at the beginning of the conference and a total of eight sessions were completed. The actual training equipment in Orcamp include; c-arm, control panel, operating table, monitors and for this occasion a simulated patient; the VIST®-C, developed by Mentice.

Participating proctors from CIRSE faculty were; Dr Paol Erik Andersen/DK, Dr Nigel Hacking/UK, Prof Lars Lönn/DK, Prof Jon Moss/UK, Prof Jean-Pierre Pelage/FR, Dr Iain Robertson/UK and Dr Raman Uberoi.

A face validity study was performed during the conference and preliminary results have been analyzed by Prof. Anthony Gallagher and Prof Lars Lönn, showing delegates trained in the Orcamp educational sessions believe team training is essential (>80%) and an overwhelming 93% found simulation based training in a hybrid room useful for their practice.

Prof. Jim A. Reekers, M.D., FCIRSE, FSIR, - former president of CIRSE and one of the main initiators to the collaboration emphasises; "The Orcamp experience is a major step forward, moving from personal skill training to team training in a real-life environment. This has great potential and implications for IR training".

Orcamp

Orcamp is a state-of-the-art technical framework for training and assessment of technical/non-technical skills and human interaction processes, i.e. cognitive and multidisciplinary team training. Orcamp can be used with or without the simulated equipment and is suitable for training of a large variety of disciplines. The actual training equipment in the Orcamp include a c-arm with simulated X-ray, control panel, operating table and monitors.

Orzone launches Orcamp for Interventional Radiology at CIRSE 2010

Orzone in collaboration with CIRSE, the Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiological Society of Europe, will provide the opportunity for education and training in a real life hybrid OR training environment – the Orcamp at CIRSE 2010 Valencia, 2–6 October. Orzone will provide a completely new opportunity for education and training for Interventional Radiology in a new comprehensive training environment at CIRSE 2010. In dedicated training sessions CIRSE delegates will have the possibility to train on specific topics in life-like situations, led by proctors from the CIRSE faculty. There will be a total of 8 Orcamp training sessions at CIRSE 2010 and each session will last approximately 60 minutes. Pre-registration for the Orcamp sessions are available at www.cirse.org.

Orcamp

Orcamp is a state-of-the-art technical framework for training and assessment of human interaction processes, i.e. cognitive and multidisciplinary team training. Its equipment is specifically directed towards endovascular procedures with an operating table, simulated x-ray equipment and fluoroscopy and control screens. Orcamp can also be used without the x-ray equipment for general surgery or intensive care scenarios. The actual training equipment in the Orcamp include a c-arm, control panel, operating table, monitors and of course a patient. The patient cases for this occasion are UAE (Uterine Fibroid Embolization) procedures on an integrated virtual reality simulator VIST®-C from Mentice.

The team training operating room Orcamp installed at Imperial College

The collaboration between Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, London, and Orzone reached an important milestone this summer, when the team training operating room Orcamp was installed at Imperial College’s St. Mary’s Campus. Following the renovation of a complete floor in the clinical skills centre at St. Mary’s, the world’s first Orcamp installation will bring a multitude of research and training possibilities to Imperial College, never done before.Imperial college

Focusing on advanced medical procedures, Orcamp facilitates training and assessment of multi-professional operating teams. Features include full-scale OR equipment such as x-ray equipment, patient table and screens, integration with available patient simulators, built-in technical and team exercises and assessment support according to validated rating scales. Since the x-ray is simulated and the patients are virtual, no radiation is emitted and no patients are put at risk while the medical teams are trained.

“We are proud to work with Imperial College, and will continue to support them in their exceptional research and training efforts” notes Petra Apell, CEO at Orzone.

About Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust

Consistently rated amongst the world's best universities, Imperial College London is a science-based institution with a reputation for excellence in teaching and research that attracts 14,000 students and 6,000 staff of the highest international quality. Innovative research at the College explores the interface between science, medicine, engineering and business, delivering practical solutions that improve quality of life and the environment - underpinned by a dynamic enterprise culture. Since its foundation in 1907, Imperial's contributions to society have included the discovery of penicillin, the development of holography and the foundations of fibre optics. Extended Collaboration between the British Cardiovascular Society and Orzone

Orzone once again provided the British Cardiovascular Society (BCS) with the software for the annual accreditation Knowledge Based Assessment (KBA) in Cardiology. In 2009 Orzone developed the software specifically designed for the KBA pilot in Cardiology in collaboration with BCS during the Conference and Exhibition in London on 31 May 2009. There were 60 volunteer Cardiology Trainees taking the exam. Taking this exam helped BCS to validate the KBA and also provided insights into the necessary logistics. Orzone can now announce that an extension to this collaboration has been agreed upon and the first KBA in Cardiology intended for Cardiology Trainees was held before the 2010 BCS Annual Conference and Exhibition on June 6th, in Manchester.

“Following the successful KBA pilot performed in collaboration with Orzone in 2009; the online knowledge-based assessment has now been introduced and was conducted at our Annual Conference in June 2010. This forms part of the assessment of those training in cardiology in the UK. This process has the potential to be adapted, according to local needs, to a larger audience elsewhere in Europe” said Professor Keith Fox, President of the British Cardiovascular Society.

Background

For trainees enrolled on the 2007 curriculum, the KBA is an obligatory part of Cardiology Training in the UK. The KBA exam is one part of the assessment of Cardiology training for SpRs and will sit alongside the WPBAs (workplace based assessments) as part of the ARCP (annual review of competence progression).

The KBA is intended to assess cardiology SpRs knowledge of the core areas of cardiovascular medicine. The required knowledge is set out in the specialty training curriculum for cardiology. Appropriate sources of information include general text-books e.g. the ESC text book of cardiovascular medicine, teaching sections in academic journals e.g. Education in Heart, and published guidelines, e.g. ESC clinical practice guidelines. These resources are not intended as an exhaustive reading list just as examples and trainees will be expected to have developed their knowledge using the wide variety of sources available.

About British Cardiovascular Society

The British Cardiovascular Society (BCS) was founded in 1922 and has evolved into a complex organisation that plays a pivotal role in the delivery of cardiovascular health across the UK. There are currently over 1,600 ordinary members of the BCS. BCS aims to support and represent all those working in the fields of cardiovascular care and research. To help achieve this aim, BCS is affiliated with 17 unique organisations that work in specific areas of cardiovascular medicine, health and patient care. Members of the affiliated groups, who are not also ordinary members of the BCS, are associate members of the BCS and there are currently approximately 8,000 health care professionals in this category.
