Imperial College London and Orzone cooperate to develop unique medical simulation product
Orzone announces its first Orcamp customer, Imperial College in London, one of the leading universities in the world. The parties have entered a long-term partnership to jointly develop content and functionality for a team training operating environment called Orcamp. Focusing on advanced medical procedures, Orcamp will facilitate training and assessment of multi-professional operating teams. Features include full-scale OR equipment such as x-ray equipment, patient table and screens, integration with available patient simulators, built-in technical and team exercises and extensive assessment support according to validated rating scales. Since the x-ray is simulated and the patients are virtual, no radiation is emitted and no patients are hurt while the medical teams are trained.
Vascular Surgery Professor Nick Cheshire, Head of Circulation and Renal Sciences at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, remarks:
“Orzone is an impressive group of people with great ideas on how to improve patient safety and procedural efficacy. I am truly looking forward to entering into this collaboration and validating the concepts proposed.”
The partnership will include an installation of Orcamp in Imperial College’s skills centre, located at St. Mary’s hospital in central London. Research activities as well as scheduled courses are planned for the second half of 2010. “With its impressive research track record within medical simulation, Imperial College was our first choice as a research partner. We expect exceptional results from our joint projects” quotes Professor Lars Lönn, Clinical Director at Orzone.

The electronic platform, developed in collaboration with UEMS, can be used for training, assessment and continuous professional development. The trainee and trainer will be able to check how well the trainee fulfils the curriculum requirements.
There is a strong focus to build a system which helps trainees, trainers, program directors and accreditation bodies in their daily practice. The exact structure and content will vary between the different Specialties and therefore Orzone will work closely together with each medical specialty.
"Team members of Orzone have been involved in scientifically groundbreaking projects relating to medical skills training during the last decade. Together with the UEMS, we are proud to bring training and assessment to the next level through this unique project.
